What is posttraumatic stress disorder?
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a traumatic event, which is life-threatening, such as military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, and serious accidents, or physical or sexual assault.
PTSD symptoms
For many people, symptoms begin almost immediately after the trauma happens. For others, they may not become a problem until years later.
“There are five symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder,” says Chad Wetterneck, PhD, psychologist, and clinical director of Rogers Behavioral Health’s Trauma Recovery Services.
They are:
- Experiencing a trauma
- Re-experiencing a trauma
- Avoiding potential triggers
- Changes in thoughts
- Changes in how the body responds to anxiety
